Dear friend,
Pork industry trade groups, heavily influenced by China, have been relentless in seeking to gut America’s most important farm animal protection laws. After losing in the Supreme Court on Prop 12, the National Pork Producers Council and its allies are pushing the so-called Food Security and Farm Protection Act and the Save Our Bacon Act in the House — direct attacks not just on animal welfare policy, but also states’ rights and democratic decision-making.
On Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 8 p.m. ET, join Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy for a powerful webinar: “Farm Protection or Factory Farm Giveaway? Exposing the Threat of the Food Security and Farm Protection Act.”
You’ll learn exactly how foreign interests that dominate our domestic pork industry are seeking to wipe out the most important farm animal welfare laws in the states. If they succeed in overturning our laws, China’s Smithfield Foods’ next step may be to bring 30-story-tall high-rise hog factory farms to the heartland. These high rises are now dominate pork production in China, and I assure you it’s a dystopian reality for pigs. These animals have been turned into meat machines and they are immobilized for the entirety of their lives.
For so many years, we’ve made progress on animal welfare — dismantling animal fighting networks, driving down horse slaughter numbers, all but eliminating greyhound racing, reducing animal testing, ending race-day doping of horses in Thoroughbred racing. But if Congress passes these anti-animal welfare bills, millions more pigs could once again be locked in cages so small they cannot turn around. Make no mistake, the foreign-dominated National Pork Producers Council wants to turn back the clock.
We cannot let them. Join me, two agricultural veterinarians, an agricultural economist, and a Pennsylvania pig farmer and hear the case we are making that we need more protections for pigs, not fewer of them.
