![]() John, Every day, 2,000 truckloads worth of plastic are dumped into our waterways.1 Much of it is single-use food packaging from grocery stores. Whole Foods is one such supermarket whose aisles are lined with groceries packaged in plastic. When it comes to reducing single-use plastic waste, Whole Foods has an opportunity to lead the way. Tell Whole Foods: Shoppers want less plastic packaging. Plastic waste enters our oceans and threatens wildlife. Seabirds have been found to regurgitate plastics when they feed their chicks.2 Beaked whales can mistake plastic bags for food.3 And at least 1,000 sea turtles die every year after being entangled in plastic.4 Supermarkets have a part to play in the health -- or the destruction -- of our natural world. That's why we're calling on Whole Foods to phase out single-use plastic packaging from its stores. Tell Whole Foods to phase out unnecessary plastic packaging. Whole Foods was once a sustainability leader. Eighteen years ago, Whole Foods became the first major grocer to get rid of plastic bags at checkout. They also phased out plastic straws.5 But as other supermarkets have committed to reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging, Whole Foods has fallen behind. As a powerful and influential company, Whole Foods has an opportunity to shape the future of sustainable grocery shopping by following suit. We're urging Whole Foods to reclaim its reputation as a leader in sustainability by phasing out unnecessary plastic in its stores. Thank you, Lisa Frank |
