Like many Pittsburghers, Kate Oczypok’s memory of her childhood is scattered with Steelers-related milestones. One that stands out: attending the 1995 AFC Championship Game at Three Rivers Stadium at age 10, craning to see the field as the home team won, 20-16 and locked in its first Super Bowl trip in 16 years.
Thirty years later, Oczypok has viewed sports fandom as an expatriate, the spouse of a Buffalo Bills fan and as a piano teacher who wants more people to make room for the arts in addition to sports.
She writes in an essay that even as she hopes more local kids get into music, football still pulses through her veins.
“When the Bills come to town in November, I hope to be there with [my husband] Brad, even if only one of us is in black and gold,” she writes.
