john,

The Communications Workers of America (CWA), is sounding the alarm about a proposed $5.7 billion deal that could have serious consequences for working people, consumers, and rural communities.
AT&T has plans to acquire Lumen’s residential fiber business across 11 states, including here in Arizona. As it stands, this deal would cherry-pick profitable fiber markets while leaving behind 1.4 million customers in underserved and rural areas. Lumen plans to keep its outdated copper lines and has admitted it intends to shut them down within 7 to 10 years — leaving many residents with unreliable and unaffordable options.
Adding to the concern, AT&T plans to copy the private equity Gigapower model it uses with Blackrock, relying heavily on non-union contractors. In Arizona, we’ve already seen how dangerous that can be: Gigapower contractors struck underground lines over 40 times in just 18 months in Mesa, causing more than $135,000 in damages, including flooded homes.
This deal puts profits over people and risks eroding good union jobs, reducing service quality, and leaving rural communities behind. Workers and consumers deserve better.
CWA is calling on the FCC and state regulators to take action — and we’re asking our union family to stand with them by adding your name to the petition. Together, we can demand:
  • A full, independent review of the deal and its impacts
  • Protections for workers and consumers
  • Clear commitments to maintain an approved service in rural areas
  • Public transparency and input in process
  • Partnership with CWA to ensure good union jobs and strong labor standards
Please take a moment to add your name to the petition and make sure regulators hear the voices of Arizona’s working families.

Share Your Story: AZ AG Town Hall on Health Insurance Claim Denials

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has announced that she will be hosting several town halls regarding health insurance denials across the state. Patients, providers, and community members who may be impacted by health insurance companies denying claims are invited to join and share their stories.

The first of these will be hosted at the Maricopa Southwest Regional Library in Gilbert, AZ

This is a great opportunity to speak directly with Attorney General Mayes about concerns regarding your health insurance.  Health insurance issues affect a large number of Arizonans, with an in-network denial rate of 21%, which is higher than the average denial rate of 19%.  When insurance claims are denied, folks are left to pay for costly medical bills on their own.

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey is a beautifully written novel set in 1920s Alaska, where Jack and Mabel, an aging couple, are struggling to build a life after years of heartbreak. One winter evening, they shape a child out of snow for fun, and soon after, a real, wild young girl named Faina begins appearing in the woods near their home. As she enters their lives, their world shifts. Isolation turns into connection, and grief into fragile joy.
Specifically, for or union working parents, this story may resonate deeply. It’s about trying to raise something meaningful in the middle of hardship, whether it’s a family, a future, or a life built on your own terms. Jack’s fear of being seemingly forced into the coal mines is a quiet but powerful reminder of what many working people know all too well. The tension between survival and autonomy. Like organizing, like parenting, this book is about forging hope in harsh places, even when the outcome is uncertain.
