Weed of the Month: Common Burdock
Common Burdock is an invasive weed originally from Europe that now grows across the U.S. It has big, heart-shaped leaves (similar to rhubarb), a deep taproot, and can grow up to 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide. In mid-summer, it produces sticky, round seed heads—called burs—that cling to clothes, fur, and hair. These burs are even said to have inspired the invention of Velcro. The plant takes over open areas, woodland edges, and prairies by crowding out native plants, and each one can produce up to 15,000 seeds.
The best time to control common burdock is early in its growth, especially during the first year when it's in the floret stage. It can be removed by hand, mechanically, or with herbicide.
