John,
My name is Maryam Jamshidi. I am a law professor and member of NIAC’s Community Council. My work focuses on national security law, public international law, and the ways legal systems are used, often cynically, to justify state violence and shield it from accountability.
The latest NIAC-YouGov poll [[link removed]] makes one thing unmistakably clear: Iranian Americans overwhelmingly oppose war, no matter who is waging it. That includes the ongoing Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.
60% percent of Iranian Americans oppose Israel’s military actions in Gaza [[link removed]] , an onslaught that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, starved millions, flattened entire neighborhoods, and now threatens to engulf the region. And our community’s rejection of militarism and war doesn’t stop there. This same poll shows strong support for diplomacy, human rights, and policies that center people over power.

This isn’t just a matter of personal conviction. It’s a rejection of the U.S. government’s uncritical military and political support for Israel , even as international legal scholars, human rights experts, and a growing chorus of governments have raised the alarm over Israeli war crimes and genocide.
NIAC’s work in this moment is critical. While others fall in line behind imperialist talking points, NIAC continues to advocate for diplomacy over escalation, and for an end to the blank-check militarism that has defined U.S. policy in the SWANA region for decades. Through public education, coalition work, and consistent messaging grounded in international law and human dignity, NIAC is building power in a space long dominated by those who profit from endless war.
Iranian Americans see through the propaganda. We know what it's like to have our humanity ignored in the name of “security.” And we refuse to let that happen to anyone anywhere, especially in our region.
