John,Last week, we received news about another terrible school shooting, this time affecting the community of Annunciation Catholic Church School in Minneapolis. A former student of the school opened fire into the school’s church, killing two children and injuring 18 other people.

I know the pain these parents are feeling: the pain of sending your child into a world you assumed was safe, only for that assumption to be shattered in the worst way imaginable.

Since the day of the shooting, I’ve seen attempts by the media and political bad actors to twist this tragedy in order to blame others: people who pray, people who don’t pray, trans people, parents, cops, school security…

All of it is an attempt to obfuscate what we know: the police recovered a semiautomatic pistol, a shotgun, a semiautomatic rifle, 116 rifle rounds, three shotgun shells, four empty semiautomatic rifle magazines, three more magazines full of live rifle rounds, three magazines of handgun ammo, and several unused shotgun shells.

I don’t list this to scare you or to make light of what happened. I share this because there should never be a world where a person can acquire that many weapons and that much ammunition.

When my own son Jordan was shot and killed in 2012, I set myself out on a mission to stop gun violence in our country, and that mission is why I continue to push for an automatic weapons ban and other common sense gun violence prevention methods.

In a time where someone can conceive of a crime like this, shouldn’t we be doing anything we can to set safeguards along the way to stop them from being able to actually enact it?

My mission is not over. I’m motivated to keep challenging my colleagues in Congress to do more to stop these tragedies.

No matter how much Republicans and the gun lobbies fight me, I won’t back down.

I hope you’ll join me on my mission. Let’s take a stand together.

Onward,
Lucy
