In 2009 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a science-backed conclusion — called "the endangerment finding" — clearly stating that methane, carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gas emissions harm the climate and threaten people's health.
The finding was monumental, setting the stage for actions that would make our air cleaner and healthier, reduce climate-damaging pollution, and prevent billions of tons of emissions by 2032. It led to many of the climate rules we have today under the Clean Air Act, including emissions limits for cars, trucks, power plants, and airplanes. People benefited, and so did wildlife, especially those threatened by climate change, from beloved American pikas to iconic polar bears.
Now the Trump administration wants to revoke the EPA’s landmark finding, giving power back to oil and gas billionaires.
If that happens, the administration will be able to cancel emissions rules for vehicles, power plants, factories, and agriculture — rules that represent years of work to reduce climate pollution and save lives. And all this while people and ecosystems are reeling from severe climate disasters, like flash floods in Texas, hurricane flooding in North Carolina, and 143 consecutive days of 100-plus degree heat in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Trump administration is driving us closer to climate catastrophe. It's time to fight back.
