*The Price of Overspending*
"On September 24th, a wave of new taxes will hit Maine families."
This is Representative Russ White of Ellsworth, with the Weekly Republican Address.
State government is already collecting record amounts of tax revenue. Yet, instead of living within its means, Augusta continues to overspend. And now, taxpayers are left holding the bill.
* **It Starts with a Smoke…*
Beginning September 24th, tobacco taxes will jump 75 percent — from $2 to $3.50 per pack. That’s an extra $548 per year for a pack-a-day smoker.
Cannabis taxes are going up 40 percent.
Together, these hikes add up to $118 million in new taxes.
These aren’t just “sin taxes.” They’re desperation taxes, meant to paper over government mismanagement and an unsustainable MaineCare budget shortfall.
*You Worked, You Saved — They Tax It Anyway*
Next, retirees are hit. Augusta has eliminated the pension income deduction — a $15 million tax increase.
This isn’t about fairness. It’s about balancing the budget on the backs of those who saved responsibly.
Instead of fixing MaineCare, Democrats have decided that your retirement savings are their backup plan.
*Even the Outdoors Isn’t Safe Anymore*
Fishing license fees are going up by $7, making a Maine tradition more expensive for families. Property taxes in our Unorganized Territories will also increase.
And once again, MaineCare shortfalls are back — more than $100 million underfunded — because Democrats insist that taxpayers cover benefits for able-bodied, childless adults who could work, volunteer, or attend school.
Republicans offered responsible solutions to protect the truly vulnerable and keep the program sustainable. Democrats said no.
*The Bottom Line*
* Smokers and cannabis users? Taxed.
* Retirees? Taxed.
* Fishermen and families? Taxed.
* Rural property owners? Taxed.
* Even homeowners trying to downsize? Taxed.
And now — a new 5.5% tax on streaming services. If you thought you could escape by watching a movie at home, Augusta found a way to tax that too.
Mainers work hard, save responsibly, and value their traditions. But Augusta’s message is clear: If you earn it, they’ll tax it.
Republicans stand with taxpayers. We believe in fiscal responsibility, accountability, and living within our means. Maine families should not be punished for government mismanagement.

Maine can do better — and it doesn’t have to be this way.
