BREAKING NOW: U.S. Supreme Court Says States Must Force Taxpayers To Fund Religious Education
DONATE TO OUR EMERGENCY RESPONSE FUND: [link removed]
Friend, there’s no way to sugarcoat what happened in the U.S. Supreme Court this morning: This decision will impact AU’s work for decades to come.
In the landmark private school vouchers case, Espinoza v. Montana Dept. of Revenue, the justices ruled in a 5-4 decision that taxpayer-funded voucher programs must fund private religious schools.
This is a devastating decision that corrupts the foundational principle of church-state separation. The court has overturned decades of precedent and the decision has the effect of privileging certain religious beliefs and allowing them to dominate our civic life. Our fight to protect religious freedom just got more difficult – and more important – than ever before.
Forcing taxpayers to pay for private religious education is a fundamental violation of their religious freedom. All too often, private religious schools reject civil rights for women and LGBTQ people. Taxpayers should not be forced to fund discrimination, or the proselytization of a religion that is not their own.

The immediate next step is clear: We must expand our efforts to stop private school voucher schemes and ensure that public dollars are used only for public schools.
While this decision is certainly not the one that we wanted, Americans United was founded precisely to fight against this kind of threat to religious freedom. Leading the defense of church-state separation is what we do, and that’s why our experts are jumping into action. The knowledge that you are with us in this fight inspires and reassures the whole AU team, friend.
