An Inflection Point Has Been Reached: August 2025 Race, Jobs And The Economy Update
By Joseph Dean
The most shocking finding from the report was the massive downward revision of May and June’s job gains, from 144,000 and 147,000 to a measly 19,000 and 14,000, respectively. It Was Supposed To Connect Segregated Neighborhoods. Did It Gentrify Them Instead?
By Jane Margolies, The New York Times
Near the Eastside Trail, the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, the birthplace of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., had a median home value of $1.7 million in 2020, a nearly fivefold jump from $345,000 in 2010, according to a mapping application created in conjunction with a recent report on gentrification and Black displacement by the nonprofit National Community Reinvestment Coalition. Tracing The Rise And Fall Of New Orleans Working Class
By Jon Jeter, Popular Resistance
Faced with an opportunity to reinvent itself after Hurricane Katrina, the city instead doubled down, using the displacement of African Americans from the impoverished 9th ward especially as an accelerant to speed up the pace of gentrification in the city. In a 2020 study by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, New Orleans ranked 5th among the United States’ 20 most gentrified cities, privatizing, as one example, its entire public school system to become home to the nation’s first all-charter school system. Court Hands A Loss To Groups Seeking Billions In Frozen Climate Funds
By Claire Brown, The New York Times
An appeals court on Tuesday ruled against several nonprofit groups that had $16 billion in climate grants frozen this year by the Trump administration. In a 2-1 ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit found that it did not have jurisdiction in the case and that the Trump administration acted legally in its attempts to claw back the funds, dashing the environmental groups’ hopes of immediately accessing money they were awarded more than a year ago. Starter Homes Are Scarce, So Utah Set A Target To Build More. Here's How It's Going
By Jennifer Ludden and Marisa Peñaloza, NPR
Median U.S. home prices are at a record high, up nearly 50% over the past five years. In Utah, they're even more than the national average, over half a million dollars. The underlying driver is a massive shortage of homes. Add to that high inflation and interest rates, and mortgages are out of reach for many. The median age of U.S. homebuyers has hit a record high of 38, up from 31 a decade before. [Read more ([link removed] ) ]
