News from Congressman Mike Levin |

Dear Neighbor,
After a busy August, I’ve just returned to Washington to continue fighting to fund local projects, protect health care access, and address the issues that matter most to our communities.
Here are some highlights from my recent work in the district.

Funding Local Infrastructure Projects |
|
Recently, I was joined by Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner and other local officials to share the risks posed by a potential federal government shutdown. With government funding set to expire on September 30th, community projects throughout our district could lose millions in federal support.
This would impact our infrastructure, law enforcement agencies, and coastal protection efforts. Projects that face delayed or reduced funding include sidewalk improvements along Glencrest Drive in Solana Beach, reconstruction of the Pier View Bridge in Oceanside, and trenching of the railroad that runs through Carlsbad Village.
You can learn more about the projects that could be impacted by a government shutdown here. You can also watch the entire press conference here.
I also discussed the importance of extending Affordable Care Act premium tax credits to prevent families from facing higher health insurance costs next year. Everyone who gets health insurance through Covered California will be affected by premium increases if the credits are not extended. I’m committed to finding a bipartisan deal to extend these tax credits by the end of the year.

I recently hosted my 126th Town Hall in Laguna Niguel to hear directly from constituents about the impacts of the recently passed Republican budget law on health care, energy costs, food assistance, and more. These forums are crucial for understanding the challenges families in our district face every day. Since taking office, I’ve worked to deliver real results, including delivering more than $1 billion in federal funding back to our communities and passing 34 bills into law under presidents of both parties.
I will continue holding monthly town halls, both in-person and on the phone, to make sure your voices are heard, and your concerns are addressed.

On August 20th, ICE conducted an operation near an elementary school in Encinitas, along a designated “safe route to school.” Many schoolchildren were present, and video footage showed a young child visibly distressed as her father was arrested. Children should not face this fear. I have consistently urged ICE to avoid schools and churches unless there is a serious threat to public safety or national security. If enforcement occurs near these institutions, the public deserves a rapid and transparent explanation. I will continue working to ensure immigration enforcement respects our communities, protects public safety, and follows the law.

Reducing Taxes on Military Retirees |
|
As a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, I’m proud to see California take a step forward by excluding up to $20,000 in military retirement benefits from state income taxes. This change will help ease the tax burden on thousands of veterans, including many in our district. I will continue pushing for the full elimination of state taxes on military pensions, so veterans receive the respect and fairness they deserve. You can read my letter to Governor Gavin Newsom here and Times of San Diego story here.

Honoring Maya Snyder as our August Constituent of the Month |
|
I'm proud to recognize Maya Snyder as our August 2025 Constituent of the Month. In just her first season as a California State Parks lifeguard, Maya has completed more than 100 rescues, including assisting in the rescue of a child caught in a rip current at San Clemente State Beach. Her dedication, skill, and public service make our beaches safer and our community stronger.
Learn more about Maya here. You can nominate someone to be the next constituent of the month by filling out this form.
