John,

Earlier this year, an Oakland County Republican stood at a podium and introduced a resolution urging the Supreme Court to overturn the right to marriage equality, a right settled by the Court ten years ago.

As Michigan’s first out gay Senator, I didn’t plan to watch from the sidelines. In fact, I walked into that press conference and took the seat directly in front of him. If he was going to try to roll back our rights, I wanted him to have to say it to my face.

…But then he left the room without taking any questions.

I was happy to take questions.

I went up to the podium and spoke about what this moment means – not just for me, not just for the LGBTQ community, but for all of us who are tired of performative politics and attacks on basic freedoms. I wanted people across Oakland County and across Michigan to know: we are not going backward. We are moving forward, and we’re doing it together.

To me, this is what public service looks like. Being present. Speaking the truth. Refusing to accept the status quo. And, at a bare minimum, answering questions when asked about proposed legislation.

We need leaders in Washington who won’t hesitate to stand up, speak clearly, and meet moments like this head-on.

If you agree, I hope you’ll consider splitting a contribution between Fight for Progress and my campaign today.
