John,
President Trump is growing more brazen in his takeover of Washington, DC.
National Guard troops are now patrolling the city carrying weapons, including from at least six different states, and Trump is saying the takeover will extend beyond the 30 days it was initially set to last.
This unprecedented use of federal power undercuts DC’s sovereignty, raises legitimate safety concerns and continues Trump’s alarming moves toward authoritarianism.
It also looks like blatant hypocrisy: While the Trump administration has made substantial cuts to public funding of government agencies and social services in the name of “government efficiency,” it’s also mobilizing federal agents to patrol DC for no clear reason other than intimidation.
The public has a right to know how much Trump’s DC takeover will cost and which units within federal agencies were reassigned to prioritize this power grab.
That’s why CREW filed urgent records requests with 13 agencies—from ICE to the National Park Service.
CREW is working to determine how much Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops and federal agents in DC is costing taxpayers, how they were trained and which units within these 13 agencies were reassigned to prioritize it.
Especially as Trump now says that Baltimore and Chicago will be next, it’s clear that accountability is sorely needed.
The people of DC—and all Americans—deserve answers. Please donate today to support CREW in its fight for accountability and transparency for Trump’s DC takeover→
