Missouri begins GOP gerrymander to help Trump rig 2026 election

- Republicans’ national effort to gain an unfair edge in next year’s midterms landed ([link removed] ) at a Missouri House committee hearing today as the state became the latest to begin a rare mid-decade redistricting push at President Donald Trump’s urging. GOP lawmakers were met with outraged resistance from Democrats during the hearing.

- The NAACP filed a lawsuit last night to stop ([link removed] ) Gov. Mike Kehoe’s (R) special session aimed both at rigging the map and restricting the ballot initiative process.

Another GOP challenge to California’s redistricting ballot measure

- Steve Hilton, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, filed ([link removed] ) a federal lawsuit challenging the Golden State’s redistricting ballot measure advanced by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), claiming it violates state and federal law.

- The lawsuit asked the court to ban Proposition 50 from appearing on the November ballot and permanently ban California from using the proposed map if approved by voters. Two previous GOP lawsuits against the measure have been dismissed by the state’s Supreme Court.

D.C. sues Trump to block massive troop deployment

- Washington, D.C. sued ([link removed] ) Trump to end his deployment of over 2,200 National Guard troops from several states in the nation’s capital, arguing the administration violated federal law by using them to conduct local law enforcement activities.

DOJ opens mortgage fraud probe into Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook

- The Justice Department launched ([link removed] ) a criminal mortgage fraud investigation into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, days after she sued Trump for attempting to fire her from the Reserve’s board.

- Bill Pulte — the Trump loyalist directing the Federal Housing Finance Agency — brought forward the unproven mortgage fraud allegations against her, though he’s ignored similar cases involving Republicans.

A win for Georgia voters

- A federal court rejected a Georgia county election board’s attempt to dismiss a pro-voting lawsuit ([link removed] ) challenging Houston County’s at-large method of electing commissioners. The board had argued that voters cannot sue under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, but the court rejected that claim.

Does Trump have the power to take control of American cities?

- After ordering thousands of troops to Los Angeles in June and more to Washington, D.C. in August, Trump once again floated the idea of sending the military to Chicago last week as he signed an executive order that primes the National Guard “for rapid mobilization,” across the country.

- Despite their dubious legality, Trump’s troop deployments have gone largely unchecked by the other branches of government. Legal experts warn ([link removed] ) that the mostly feeble response from the courts and Congress to Trump’s power grab could set the stage for the president to take his show of military force on the road.
