Hi friends — a quick update for you on the California redistricting situation.
The California state legislature successfully passed the Election Rigging Response Act last month, paving the way for a statewide ballot measure to temporarily require new congressional maps in California until the next census and redraw in 2032. The measure, Proposition 50, will be on your ballot on November 4th (which means ballots will be arriving in our mailboxes in just over a month!).
A yes vote means adopting the measure — putting five more congressional seats in play for Democrats here in California to offset the unprecedented, mid-decade redistricting that Trump demanded from Republican governors across the country.
While I have believed for a long time that every state should have their maps drawn by independent redistricting commissions, the reality is that if we play by those rules while Republicans aren’t…well, to put it bluntly, we’re screwing ourselves over. And we’ll likely lose our democracy in the process.
If we have a real shot at flipping the House next year (and we definitely do!) we can’t squander it just because we feel like the GOP playbook is icky. It is — but it’s what we’ve got.
The stakes are too high for us to do anything other than fight fire with fire. Americans *literally* can’t afford another two years of a Republican trifecta in Washington!
I recently published an op-ed in the San Diego Union-Tribune detailing my thoughts, which you can read here.
If you’re with me on this, I’m asking for your help. I’m going to be doing everything I can to support Prop 50 and the Democrats who will need help fighting for these additional seats. Will you pitch in whatever you can to support my efforts?
