I’m old enough to remember when the Republican Party stood for “small government and free markets.”

But today they stand for something no one has ever seen in America: A single would-be dictator taking over nearly all the institutions of government and, increasingly, the private sector as well.

Trump is on the verge of usurping control over the powerful Federal Reserve by illegally firing a Biden-appointed member of the Board of Governors. He seized a 10 percent stake in the tech giant Intel while promising “many more” corporate takeovers to come. His White House even created a scorecard that rates American corporations on how loyal they are to Trump.

In sum, an increasingly large part of our economy is no longer being determined by supply and demand but by Trump personally, and I believe this will inevitably lead to his political downfall as his arbitrary and mercurial decisions drive the economy off a cliff.
