President's Message September is National Preparedness Month—a reminder that resilience begins with preparation, equipping individuals, families, schools, and communities with the tools they need before disaster strikes. For schools, emergency preparedness is not only about protecting health, safety, and security—it's also about keeping students on track educationally. School nurses bring vital expertise to every phase of emergency preparedness and response. When school nurses collaborate with administrators, community leaders, and policymakers, we strengthen coordinated planning and response efforts, helping to foster safe, supportive, and equitable learning environments for all students. School nurses recognize that children and youth are both vulnerable during disasters and powerful contributors to community resilience. By teaching them to understand risks and how to protect themselves, we are building the foundation for a safer future. Ready.gov offers resources to support planning, response, and recovery efforts designed to help integrate the needs of children and youth into disaster planning. Together, we can strengthen preparedness and resilience in our schools and communities. Lynn Nelson, MSN, RN, NCSN NASN President Better Health.
