2024 Poverty Numbers Will Foreshadow an Even Bleaker Future, Thanks to Policy Attacks on People Who Are Marginalized

CLASP released a statement yesterday in anticipation of the U.S. Census Bureau’s September 9th release of the national Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance data for 2024. While we will have more to say next week, we anticipate that the numbers will show more poverty in 2024, particularly among children, and more people without health insurance. We also explain that the outlook for 2025 and beyond will be even grimmer, given the millions of people who are losing health insurance, food assistance, and other supports because of the reconciliation bill and executive actions by the Trump Administration.

Children’s Advocates Outraged by Trump Administration’s Attempt to Deport Children in Need of Safety

The CLASP-managed Children Thrive Action Network released a statement about the Trump Administration’s attempt to forcibly remove children in immigration proceedings over the Labor Day weekend. The statement focused on the disregard that this action showed for the children’s safety and well-being.

CLASP Comments on Department of Labor Rules

CLASP’s Education, Labor, & Worker Justice team has submitted comments on four proposed Department of Labor (DOL) rules that would affect migrant farmworkers, home care workers, workers with visas, and workplace safety. The comments highlight the necessity of DOL rules and regulations that protect the health, safety, and dignity of all workers.

On September 5 at 2 p.m. ET, Wendy Chun-Hoon will moderate the Coalition on Human Needs webinar, “Using Poverty and Health Insurance Facts in Hard Times - Training on Using Survey Data to Show How Good Policies Yield Good Outcomes.”

As the Census Bureau prepares to release poverty, income, health insurance, and other 2024 data on September 9 and 11, this webinar will teach attendees how to find state, local, and national data showing the connection between federal and state policy choices and the number of people living in poverty or who are uninsured. The webinar will also discuss how to best show how previous policy improvements reduced poverty and uninsurance rates, and how to make these points for your specific state.

 

On September 25 at 1 p.m. ET, Priya Pandey, Suma Setty, and Wendy Cervantes will participate in “From Harm to Hope: Supporting Kids and Empowering Communities Through Advocacy and Practice” at the CTAN and Children at Risk sixth annual virtual Immigration Summit.
