John,
The ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic are impacting so many aspects of our lives. The pandemic has exacerbated the already elevated levels of food insecurity in the U.S. One in five adults in our country didn't have enough food to eat in the early weeks of the pandemic. Since then, tens of millions have lost their jobs, been furloughed or seen salaries cut. The loss of jobs and income is also dramatically increasing economic insecurity and homelessness.
In response, CHN is supporting a national coalition to demand the U.S. Senate act immediately to increase SNAP and child nutrition assistance benefits to support people and families struggling in the midst of the pandemic and to demand Congress broaden the moratorium on evictions and provide emergency rental assistance so people are able to pay their rent.
So far, together, we have sent nearly 150,000 letters to U.S. Senators.
We are going to keep up the pressure on Mitch McConnell and the Senate; this time to push them to vote on direct, cash aid measures to millions of Americans who have been struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic—including a renewal of enhanced Unemployment Insurance, which is set to expire at the end of July.
This Friday, Senators are jetting from the Capitol to return home for a two-week recess. While they are back in their home states, enjoying their time off, we are going to make sure they keep hearing from us!
Can you make an end-of-month donation to CHN today to launch a letter campaign to tell Senators to act immediately to pass the next COVID-19 relief package, including additional cash aid to families in need? The House passed legislation more than 45 days ago—and we are still waiting for Mitch to call a vote!
Struggling families, the poor, and vulnerable people throughout our country urgently need money in their pockets to pay for food, monthly rent, and regular utilities bills. Enhanced jobless benefits, for example, which have provided great help to millions of Americans, are slated to expire at the end of July.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sent a letter to Mitch McConnell Monday reminding him the House passed legislation 45 days ago, and calling on the Senate to act. “It is unacceptable that the Senate would recess without addressing this urgent issue. On behalf of the millions of American families who desperately need Congressional action, we demand you change your mind and decide to work with us for the good of the country.”
We agree.
Donate to CHN today to power our efforts to tell Mitch McConnell and Republican Senators that we need the Senate to follow the House and pass legislation to help millions of U.S. families.
We are going to keep up the pressure on members of the Senate throughout their two-week Fourth of July break. We are going to make sure they hear loudly and clearly that millions of Americans need direct aid in the face of this pandemic.
Thank you for your support during this challenging time,
Deborah Weinstein Executive Director, Coalition on Human Needs
