! ACT NOW !
Hi John
The Northern Ireland Assembly is introducing a new Baby Loss Certificate Scheme that aims to provide formal recognition for parents who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of a baby up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.
A
Consultation on the initiative presents a unique opportunity for the public to share their thoughts and shape how this Scheme will function.
We wholeheartedly support this Scheme and believe that it's a significant step toward acknowledging the existence of unborn babies before 24 weeks. These certificates will serve as a meaningful gesture for families, offering them a tangible acknowledgement of their child and their profound loss.
However, this Scheme also uncovers a glaring contradiction: while the Northern Ireland Assembly recognises that a baby exists before 24 weeks, it also permits the destruction of innocent babies at the same stage.
Moreover, we’ve recently discovered that the Consultation does not address the experiences of women grieving the loss of their baby following an abortion. We must ensure these women’s grief and remorse is visible and validated.
The consultation is open until Friday 12th September at 4pm, and we urgently ask you to participate. Your input is essential to ensure that ALL women who have experienced the loss of a child, including those children lost through abortion, are recognised.

Most of the questions are general and can be answered based on your own personal views and experiences.
However, we encourage you to focus on Part 6 – “Other comments or observations not covered by preceding Parts.”
Question 14 asks: "Please tell us any information or comments you would like us to consider as we proceed in establishing the Scheme."
In your answer, please highlight these following key points (feel free to express them in your own words):
• The scheme must be open to ALL women who lose a baby in pregnancy before 24 weeks, including loss through abortion.
• Women grieving after an abortion must be explicitly included and acknowledged in this scheme.
• Any official information on the scheme (leaflets, advice, and guidance for health professionals and the public) must clearly state that women who are grieving after an abortion can apply for a certificate.
• Pregnancy loss, whether through miscarriage or abortion, leaves many women experiencing deep grief that often goes unacknowledged. A certificate will help give them recognition, dignity, and compassion.
• Recognising a woman's grief after an abortion can support their mental health and emotional healing by affirming that their baby existed and their grief is valid.
• Issuing certificates for women grieving after abortion is not about politics: it is about compassion, healing, and recognising every baby loss as significant.
Every baby matters. Every loss is important. This baby Loss Certificate Scheme must reflect that reality.
Your voice can truly make a difference, so please act today! The deadline for the consultation is fast approaching.
🕓 Deadline: Friday, 12th September, 2025, at 4 PM
Please share this ACTION ALERT with your friends and family. Also share it on all your social media platforms.
Thank you for your support in standing up for the dignity and humanity of every child.
For life,
Bernadette Smyth
