This week, NCLEJ submitted our comments to the U.S. Department of Labor regarding their proposed rule to rescind the 2013 Home Care Final Rule, which extended Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) protections to domestic workers.
This proposed rule is yet another assault by the Trump administration on the already-marginalized communities NCLEJ serves across the United States. Not surprisingly, the rule would have a disproportionate impact on the people who are the lifeblood of the homecare industry—namely, immigrants, women, and people of color, not to mention the elderly and disabled clients with whom they work.
At NCLEJ, we believe that poverty, racial oppression, and discrimination against people with disabilities are all deeply intertwined. Justice on any of these fronts cannot be achieved without addressing the others, and that is perhaps no more apparent than in our advocacy for homecare workers.
The National Center for Law and Economic Justice advances racial and economic justice through ground-breaking impact litigation, policy advocacy, and support for grassroots organizing. We have provided legal representation and support since 1965.
