This week the Tories announced that they would remove all net zero requirements on oil and gas companies drilling in the North Sea, focusing solely on "maximising extraction".[1] This is a reckless and disingenuous attempt to set back an urgently needed fossil fuel phaseout, sacrificing communities and futures all around the world to Big Oil’s destructive agenda.
Given that North Sea oil and gas is extracted by private companies and 80% is exported, exploring new fields will do nothing to improve domestic energy security or reduce bills.[2] Instead, it will deliver further massive profits to already wealthy fossil fuel CEOs and shareholders, leaving the rest of us struggling with soaring bills, and the extreme weather and economic disruption/inflation from the accelerating climate crisis.
The fact that climate denialism is growing in major political parties after more than half a century of climate change awareness, and during the literal hottest UK summer since records began, beggars belief, and points to the extreme stranglehold the fossil fuel industry still has over our politics.[3]
The biggest drivers of anti-net zero rhetoric continue to be Reform UK, hardly surprising given that between 2019 and 2024, about £2.3 million (around 92%) of the party’s donations came from oil/gas investors, high-polluting industries, and climate science deniers.[4]
Our call for taxing extreme wealth and polluters is not just about raising vital funds to pay for climate action, job protection and repaired public services. It’s about reducing the power these actors have over our politicians and our democratic institutions.
Labour has so far defended net zero, but their unwillingness to tackle extreme corporate power in our energy sector has so far failed to bring energy bills down, handing easy wins to right wing narratives.
So, we must take it upon ourselves to show that there are real solutions to the crises we face, and to build the movement that can win them. Tackling energy security, inflation and the climate crisis go hand in hand. It’s simple. Tax those responsible for getting us into this mess. Reduce their ability to do more harm. Invest in our future, in functioning public services and secure jobs.
This is our moment to demand real change. Concrete solutions and serious action. Join us on Saturday 20 September to Make Them Pay.
