Tennessee ranks among the bottom in the nation for maternal health outcomes, and yet its legislature (made up of a white, male supermajority) continues to CUT funding for care and ignore calls for systemic change. Most notoriously, women in TN are living under a total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.

For the past 8 years, Aftyn Behn has been organizing in rural and small-town communities. She is an advocate for women and a national expert in rural voter engagement. Now she is running in the special election for U.S. Congress in Tennessee, District 7.

Between 2010 and 2022, over 500 US hospitals closed their obstetrics units, and 50% of ALL rural counties now lack hospital-based labor and delivery care. In fact, 1 in 3 counties have no OB/GYN at all.

An analysis by the National Partnership for Women and Families found that, after Trump signed his so-called Big Beautiful Bill, which strips away access to healthcare for millions of people, 150 more rural maternity units are at risk of closing.
