Students have flooded back into Pittsburgh campuses, an annual tide that brings foot traffic to Oakland streets, football tailgates to the North Shore, and, invariably, reports of hazing among undergraduates, particularly those involved in Greek life.
State- and federally-mandated reporting shows that there were 15 accusations of hazing at the University of Pittsburgh during the 2023-24 academic year and 91 since the 2017-18 year. Three out of 26 Pitt fraternities account for almost half of all allegations since 2021.
One fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, was accused of staging physical fights in wooded areas and punitive consumption of chewing tobacco and vomit.
Even with relatively new anti-hazing laws, schools largely rely on students and Greek organizations to effectively enforce anti-hazing policies, a lawyer told Public Source.
