Hi John,

Some Canadians are missing a watchdog for their politicians. You can push to change that.

There’s an auditor general for the federal government and every single province has one. But there’s no auditor general for First Nations communities. So there’s nobody to call when grassroots Indigenous activists have questions about what’s happening with their community’s money.

The auditor general is a key part of keeping politicians accountable. The federal auditor general caught over $4.6 billion in CERB overpayments and raised the alarm about tens of millions of taxpayers’ dollars being wasted in Ottawa’s green slush fund.

Grassroots Indigenous people don’t have an auditor general looking into First Nation community finances.

Many First Nations are doing a fine job, but there are some with serious questions about accountability. Activists need someone to call when they have questions.

Both the Assembly of First Nations and Government of Canada recognize the need for an Indigenous auditor general. They jointly commissioned a report that states: “A First Nations Auditor General would provide many benefits, both today and in the future.”

My friend Hans McCarthy is an Indigenous activist fighting for accountability at the Frog Lake First Nation.

He’s been trying to find out what’s happening to money in a trust fund for oil and gas revenues on his First Nation, but his local politicians are refusing to be accountable and give him answers.

An auditor general is key to helping people like Hans expose what’s going on in First Nations communities.

Will you sign the petition calling on the federal government to create an auditor general for First Nations communities?

We, the undersigned, call for the establishment of an auditor general for First Nations communities.

I’ve known Hans for years now and his resolve to keep fighting for transparency in his community is inspiring. He fights hard for his family and his neighbours. An auditor general for First Nations communities would make his fight a lot easier. Please sign the petition if you agree.

Sincerely,

Gage Haubrich, Prairie Director
