Corruption, attacks on watchdogs, anti-democratic crackdowns on people protesting for racial justice, the sidelining of experts in favor of loyalists and cronies.

It’s a lot to keep track of. Here at CREW, we’ve been busy—from filing Freedom of Information Act requests about the cost of Trump’s temporary fence around the White House and the Postal Service’s preparations for voting by mail, to calling for Attorney General Barr’s impeachment with more than 50,000 of you joining us and demanding that Congress take action—we’re keeping up the fight for transparent, accountable government.

Here are a few more recent CREW actions you might have missed:

  • We called for the State Department Office of Inspector General to investigate what appears to be a politicized response from the State Department to Congressional oversight. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s State Department has apparently withheld information and documents from Democratic Congressional committee chairs with oversight authority over the department, while quickly complying with requests from Republican committee chairs investigating President Trump’s political rival. Withholding information based on partisan affiliation would violate the law, and executive branch policies. Read more here.
  • After the announcement that the Republican National Convention would be moving to Jacksonville, we requested records from the Jacksonville mayor’s office, as well as from the state of Florida about coronavirus safety procedures at the convention. Less than an hour later, Jacksonville replied that they had no responsive records to our request. That would seem to imply that no precautions are being planned for an enormous public event in a state facing a spiking rate of infections—a truly alarming prospect.
  • When President Trump removed Mitch Behm, the acting Inspector General at the Department of Transportation, and replaced him with a political appointee, it wasn’t only watchdogs like CREW who were concerned. We recently received records that show shock and disbelief at the move from top officials. Behm’s ongoing investigation into DOT Secretary Elaine Chao makes the decision to replace him with a Trump political appointee particularly concerning.

At CREW, we’re going to continue investigating, taking legal action and sounding the alarm about corruption, abuse of power and unaccountable government, no matter what.

Thanks for being a part of the fight,

The CREW Team
