Distraction-free learning, free school meals – New York schools are making big changes

John,

The school year is officially here – and we’re ready to make it one of the best yet.

Here’s just a few ways that we’re setting our kids up for success:

Distraction-free learning is here!

This school year, all K-12 public schools, charter schools, and BOCES across New York State are going distraction-free! That means our kids are going to spend less time scrolling, and more time learning and creating real, in-person connections with their peers.

On the last day of school, I promised our kids and teachers that next year would be different – and I kept that promise.

Free school meals for every student in New York.

Universal school meals are coming to New York State starting this school year! No forms, no hoops to jump through, just quality, nutritious food to help our kids learn. By having breakfast and lunch covered, we’re not just putting food in the stomachs of New York’s kids. We’re putting money back in parents’ pockets to the tune of $165 per month!

Protecting our kids’ mental health – online and offline

We know that kids today are facing all new kinds of challenges. That’s why I’ve made protecting their mental health a top priority:

  • Expanded support at schools: From putting a mental health counselor in every school who needs one, to investing in a statewide program that trains teachers to spot and respond to mental health challenges, we’re helping kids get support, right at school.
  • Cracking down on addictive algorithms. Social media companies use predatory algorithms to target kids and keep them hooked. I’m proud to have signed nation-leading legislation that puts our kids’ safety over these companies’ profits.
  • Creating more opportunities to connect IRL: With Get Offline, Get Outside and Unplug and Play, we’re investing in swimming pools, playgrounds, community centers, and other places across the state where kids can make friends, create lifelong memories, and just be kids.

Putting money back in parents’ pockets…

Especially during back-to-school season, we know that every dollar counts. That’s why we’re delivering direct relief through our STAR Rebate and Inflation Refund — making it a little easier for parents to pay for school supplies, clothes, and other costs that come up this fall.

We’ve also more than tripled the Child Tax Credit, giving parents some breathing room when tax season comes around. Instead of added stress, families can look forward to real financial relief.

…and more money for our schools

Affordability doesn’t stop at home. Our record investments in school aid will help schools have the resources they need to help kids succeed — without passing extra costs on to taxpayers. With this funding, we’re protecting your hard-earned money and giving every child a fair shot at success.

I know that education isn’t just about our K-12 students. It’s about making sure every New Yorker has the tools they need to succeed in life. That’s why I fought hard to make community college completely free for adult learners going into high-demand fields. Learn more about SUNY Reconnect and CUNY Reconnect and apply!

I’m working to set our students up for success today, tomorrow, and for many years to come.

Here’s to an incredible school year ahead!

Ever Upward,

Gov. Kathy Hochul
