Dear John,
“Democracy rarely dies in a single moment. It is chipped away via abdication: rationalizations and compromises as those with power and influence tell themselves that yielding just a little ground will keep them safe or that finding common ground with a disrupter is more practical than standing against him. This is the enduring lesson of Weimar: extremism never triumphs on its own. It succeeds because others enable it — because of their ambition, because of their fear, or because they misjudge the dangers of small concessions. In the end, however, those who empower an autocrat often surrender not only their democracy but also the very influence they once hoped to preserve.”
— Daniel Ziblatt, *Warnings From Weimar*
In his recent article for *Foreign Affairs Magazine*, Professor Daniel Ziblatt issued a stark warning about the state of America. Democracy in America is buckling under relentless attack from the Far Right. Parallels to the Weimar Republican can no longer be dismissed. There are ways to avoid collapse, and mistakes that would hasten it. We are, both as a state and as a country, failing to do enough.
In Texas, we feel the attacks acutely: erosion of voting rights, threats to personal liberty, and a legal system too often twisted to serve the ambitions of the powerful rather than the needs of the people.
That is why I am running to be Texas’s next Attorney General — because this office must be more than a political weapon.
I believe in a Texas where the law protects all of us equally, where checks and balances check extremism and balance power, and where democratic institutions are strengthened, not eroded by those entrusted to uphold it.
This is the fight of our time. Not a grand specter of war fought on distant shores, but a test as to whether our private outrage can translate into public courage.
That’s why I’m writing to you today, John. We need people like you to join us in the fight.

I’m ready to lead the change, away from concessions to autocratic power, to where justice is fair, democracy is secure, and power is wielded responsibly, not recklessly.
I hope you’ll join me.
