The Second of our Customized Employment in Action Video Series: Robert's Story

Meet Robert Gitterman, a clerk for the Talent and Culture Team in the human resources department at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington, DC. Before hiring Robert, the team consisted of only two members who were struggling to keep up with the administrative work. Robert’s job involves filing and sorting, taking inventory of supplies, creating purchase orders, and preparing onboarding packages for new employees. He plays a critical role in the hiring process by communicating with job candidates through email and monitoring their applications and onboarding paperwork to completion.

Robert, who is nonverbal, says that technology has been key to his success at work. He uses his iPad or the Notes app on his phone to talk with coworkers. In this video, created with ODEP’s National Expansion of Employment Opportunities Network initiative, learn how Robert found his ideal job through SEEC. Based in Montgomery County, Maryland, SEEC provides customized employment (CE), community engagement, and supported living services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Hear how job coaches at SEEC used CE strategies to match Robert’s computer and organizational skills to support the needs of the hotel. Robert has been working at the hotel since February 2023, two days a week for five hours each day. “Not only is he a hard worker, [but] he has a great sense of humor and I know that all the colleagues love seeing him when he comes in,” says Kelly Wilson, regional director for the Talent and Culture Team.

ICYMI: The First of our Customized Employment in Action Video Series: Simon's Story

Meet Simon Ho, an administrative assistant at a downtown San Francisco law firm. Simon, who has autism, handles the firm’s mail, filing, and responds to requests from lawyers. These tasks play to many of his strengths. In the video below, we highlight how Simon found his ideal job through WorkLink, a program that enables people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to work.

Started by Maryland-based nonprofit TransCen, WorkLink specializes in one-on-one assistance, facilitating ideal matches between employers and job seekers with I/DD and supporting wraparound day services for disabled workers who need them. The video, created with ODEP’s National Expansion of Employment Opportunities Network (NEON) initiative, explains how WorkLink used customized employment strategies to match Simon’s specific skills with the law firm’s needs. His coworkers say Simon’s contributions greatly improve office efficiency and productivity. “For PSA, they now have one of their most reliable employees,” says WorkLink program director Jeric Lake. “Simon doesn’t miss work. He doesn't come in late, and he loves his job.”
