John,

Ten years ago, people all over the country celebrated when the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land. Now, that hard-won right is under threat, thanks to the resurfacing of an old marriage equality foe.

Kim Davis, the former county clerk jailed in 2015 in Kentucky for refusing to issue a marriage license to a gay couple, has filed an appeal straight to the Supreme Court. Her case argues the Court should treat marriage like it did abortion in Roe v. Wade and allow states to decide. She cites Justice Clarence Thomas’s support for overturning Obergefell, the decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

Conservatives are lining up to make this happen. Already this year, nine states have introduced or passed legislation attacking marriage equality. If you want a stark reminder of what happens when Democrats are in charge, look no further than the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act, passed by a Democratic Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden. The Respect for Marriage Act requires all states and the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages and protects existing marriages if Obergefell is overturned.

With a 6-3 conservative majority – including three Trump-appointed justices – the current Court is more extreme than ever. Chief Justice John Roberts, in his Obergefell dissent, warned the majority ruling had “no basis in the Constitution.”

Chrissy ran for Congress with a promise: to protect and defend the LGBTQ community. She helped pass the Equality Act to ensure LGBTQ Americans are fully protected under federal civil rights law – and she continues that fight today.

This moment demands action from all of us. With the Supreme Court poised to revisit marriage rights, we need a surge of grassroots support. So please, will you take a minute to add your name to our petition?

Tell Congress: Protect same sex marriage. >>
