Dear John,
When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, OutRight started hearing from LGBTIQ communities globally about how they were faring and the news was alarming. Because of the lockdowns, too many lost their income leading to a lack of food and basic necessities. And too many governments or humanitarian relief programs are not inclusive of LGBTIQ people. In response, we launched our Emergency Fund. One of our 60 grantees is Jardín De Las Mariposas.
In the wake of COVID-19, Jardín De Las Mariposas has struggled to support their local community. As a shelter and rehabilitation center for LGBTQIA+ individuals located in Tijuana, Mexico, they served as a sanctuary for refugees seeking asylum as well as caring for at-risk immunocompromised residents.
Their hardships were exacerbated due to the dramatic increase of people seeking help, and the limited food and basic medicine they had available. Due to the astounding need, OutRight quickly awarded them a grant of $10,000 so that they had the ability to continue supporting their community.
