America First Legal Launches “Parent and Student Action Center” to Equip and Empower Families with Resources to Defend Parental Rights and Protect Children in School

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, America First Legal (AFL) launched its Parent and Student Action Center, a comprehensive resource equipping and empowering families with tools to defend parental rights and protect their children as they return to school. At a time when teachers’ unions are openly defying federal law and resisting the Trump Administration’s directives, AFL is providing parents with a roadmap to fight back — arming them with the knowledge and tools they need to safeguard their rights and their children’s futures.

As children return to classrooms across the country, many families are caught between a lawless education bureaucracy and unions determined to resist federal protections. Parents are on the front lines, forced to shield their children from discrimination, radical leftist teachers, and racist, anti-semitic ideologies. AFL is committed to ensuring parents are no longer powerless against public school indoctrination.

AFL’s Parent and Student Action Center includes new and updated Toolkits providing parents a roadmap and resources on how to exercise their rights under the following federal laws:

  • Title VI: Prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

  • Title IX: Bars sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs or activities, covering admissions, athletics, and treatment of students and staff.

  • PPRA: Gives parents rights regarding surveys, evaluations, or instructional materials funded by the federal government, especially those touching on sensitive topics like religion, sex, or politics.

  • FERPA: Protects the privacy of student education records and gives parents and adult students the right to access and control disclosure of those records.

  • Freedom of Information Act and Open Records Laws: Allow the public to request access to records from federal agencies.

AFL knows parents may be alarmed by what their children could be exposed to in our nation’s K-12, colleges, and universities, and rightly so. With AFL’s Toolkits, parents do not need to wonder what their children are being taught, or whether they are being exposed to materials and questions parents do not approve of.

Parents want their children to learn information that is objective, grounded in facts, and free of woke, ideologically-driven content. But teachers’ unions, teachers, and administrators have other plans; curricula filled with ideological agendas out of sync with families’ values, and rhetoric that parents do not want their children to learn. Parents know they need to be vigilant.

AFL’s Toolkits arm parents with information to help them sort through key laws, assert their rights, and protect their children. These Toolkits, which include template letters parents and students can use, provide important resources. Parents can learn how to access their children’s education records under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and how to know about and opt out of divisive race and gender-related lessons, curricula, and invasive questionnaires under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA).

AFL’s Title VI Toolkit informs parents how to file a civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights under Title VI, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin, including claims by Jewish students for acts of antisemitism. AFL’s Title IX Toolkit addresses how parents can file a civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights based on sex discrimination, prohibited under Title IX.

AFL’s Borrower Defense Toolkit is geared to help Americans with federal student loans fight back against the woke anti-American and antisemitic propaganda and insanity that has taken over our colleges and universities. Federal law prohibits colleges and universities from making “substantial misrepresentations” or omissions to prospective and current students regarding their institution’s educational programs in marketing materials, on websites, and elsewhere. Borrower Defense is the legal process through which students and graduates victimized by these misrepresentations may discharge their student loan debt. If successful, the Department of Education will hold the higher-ed institution accountable and make it pay for the damage it is doing to our taxpayer-funded institutions.

“Parents have a fundamental obligation to raise the next generation and to instill values that will not just preserve and sustain our values, but that will facilitate unprecedented greatness for generations to come. No failing school bureaucracy should ever stand in the way of greatness, and these resources that the team at America First Legal have put together have the potential to change outcomes in demonstrably beneficial ways,” said Gene Hamilton, President of America First Legal.

“AFL is proud to share these important Toolkits with America’s parents,” said Julie Alexa Strauss, Senior Counsel of America First Legal. “There is nothing more cherished and important than the watchful eyes of parents as they safeguard their children’s emotional and academic growth, instilling their family’s values and principles in their children throughout their lives. Parents do not surrender these at the schoolhouse door. As we witness schools increasingly encroach on them, AFL stands with America’s families. AFL understands and respects that families are the fabric of America, and we are here to support and empower parents and their children as they push back against woke ideology and other actions that violate the law whenever we are able.”

“In June, the United States Supreme Court explicitly and forcefully reaffirmed the constitutional rights of parents to direct the education of their children,” said America First Legal Senior Counsellor Ian Prior. “America First Legal is committed to empowering parents to exercise that fundamental right and fighting back against the special interests that are controlling our local public schools and using children as the subjects of a backwards and harmful social and political experiment.”
