Dear Supporter, The 2010 Supreme Court Citizens United ruling gave corporations and wealthy donors unlimited spending power to support or oppose political candidates through super PACS, independent expenditures, and secret money groups. The result is a system in which the ultra-wealthy can sway entire elections, dictate the policy agenda and dominate the political landscape with little to no accountability or transparency. The DISCLOSE Act, which was recently reintroduced into the Congress, takes a number of steps to ensure the disclosure of secret money spending in order to help create greater accountability in our democracy and put the power back in the hands of voters. We can’t afford to let secret money influence the 2020 election! Call your member of Congress TODAY and urge them to support this important bill>> Among many of its provisions, the DISCLOSE Act seeks to undo the harm incurred by Citizens United by requiring organizations spending money in elections – including super PACS and certain nonprofit groups – to disclose donations of $10,000 or more during an election cycle. It closes loopholes, like preventing political operatives from using layers of shell corporations and front groups to hide donor identities, and protects against foreign influence in American elections by prohibiting domestic corporations with significant foreign control, ownership or direction from spending money in U.S. elections. We must build support for these reforms in Congress and educate the country about how these policies can help fix our broken system. Call your member of Congress NOW and demand full support of this legislation! Thanks for everything you do. Tori Slatton, Digital Campaign Coordiantor
