At just 15, Babulal was trafficked with his family from Odisha, India to work in a brick kiln hundreds of miles from home. Promised a fair advance for urgent family needs, they instead received nothing—and were trapped by threats and violence.


Babulal no longer spent his days studying hard in school or his afternoons playing cricket with his friends. Instead, he and his family were forced to work from dawn to dusk making up to 1,500 bricks a day under constant abuse.


One day, the kiln owner’s brutal assault drove Babulal’s family to flee in the night. With IJM’s help and local officials’ swift action, they were found, rescued and returned to his childhood home, far from the brutality he’d been forced to endure at the brick kiln.


Today, as a leader in Odisha’s Released Bonded Laborers’ Association, he advocates for survivors’ rights to government officials.


He has even helped more than 300 people receive funds for rehabilitation from the government. These funds are vital to the restoration and rebuilding of the lives of those once trapped in slavery and now living in freedom.


Reflecting on his journey, Babulal says,

“Today I am very happy. We worked hard after we came out of bondage… When I think of our situation at home, it is good right now as we are working hard and we are slowly coming up in life.”
