It’s September, which means that National Suicide Prevention Week is almost here, taking place September 7–13. At AFSP, we also observe all of September as National Suicide Prevention Month –– because suicide is a leading public health issue that affects us all.
This year, we are highlighting the theme of “Looking Out for Each Other.” Everything we do as an organization is based around this idea of the importance of interpersonal connection:
- From the bond initially formed through AFSP’s founding in 1987, when families affected by loss connected with researchers eager to learn more about how to look out for those struggling and those affected,
- to the messages and support sent through our education and loss programs,
- and the public policy priorities we champion through our collective voices, as well as so much more.
What makes all of these efforts to look out for each other possible –– and brings people together year after year through our local chapters –– are the Out of the Darkness Walks.

Through the Out of the Darkness Walks, and the programs and initiatives they support, we foster a caring community of people who walk together, learn together, understand and encourage each other, and cheer each other on through their healing:
People who have experienced suicide loss or challenges with their mental health… people holding each other’s hands, holding space for each other… ready with a hug, or an open heart, ready and willing to listen. Family, friends, neighbors, students, and coworkers who’ve got each other’s backs, looking out for each other.
When people come together, hope can win. This is the heart of AFSP: a community of people looking out for each other. Because you are not alone. And because we can all play a role in preventing suicide.
Read more about this September’s theme in our [recent news release]([link removed]) at the link below, which highlights special events and resources like our Community Walks, construction suicide prevention initiatives, a special broadcast of Audacy’s “I’m Listening” with AFSP Chief Medical Officer Dr. Christine Yu Moutier, and more!
