Sign the petition: Don't put Donald Trump on Mount Rushmore!
Dear MoveOn member,
MAGA loyalist Representative Andy Ogles recently urged the government to put Donald Trump on Mount Rushmore. After saying the White House is ushering in "America’s Golden Age," Ogles added, "it is essential that we immortalize President Trump's likeness on Mount Rushmore."1
Just like Trump’s grotesque and wasteful military parade, glorifying a sitting president with national statues, monuments, currency, and holidays is straight out of the authoritarian playbook.
In democracies, leaders don’t get carved into mountains while still in power. Sitting presidents don’t belong on money, monuments, airports, and landmarks—especially not Trump, who has defied the rule of law and threatened our democracy like no president before.
Will you sign the petition to OPPOSE putting Trump on Mount Rushmore?
And it doesn't stop at Mount Rushmore. Recently, there has been a wave of Republican bills to glorify Trump by putting his face on U.S. currency, and his name on airports, transit systems, and the Kennedy Center. One piece of legislation would even make Trump's birthday a national holiday.2
If it were up to Republicans, Trump would be on Rushmore, the Kennedy Center Opera House would become "Melania Trump Opera House," the D.C. metro and airport would be named for Trump, his face would go on the $100 bill, and even U.S. coastal waters would be renamed after him.3
It's outrageous, undemocratic, and dangerous. We can't let Republicans use our government to glorify Trump and attack the foundations of our country. Will you sign the petition?
And it's not just Republicans who want to further desecrate the Black Hills with Trump's face. Trump himself posted a picture of himself next to the monument, his head positioned as if it was the fifth bust.4 And—despite his public denial—during his first term, then-Governor Kristi Noem said he told her it was his “dream” to have his face on the monument.5
Noem even spent more than $1,000 on a Mount Rushmore replica featuring Trump "because she knew it was something he wanted to receive."6
The drive to put Trump’s face on Mount Rushmore is particularly disturbing because the monument is built in the Black Hills on unceded Lakota territory—deeply important land that the U.S. government stole from Native Americans. And the person who led the construction of Mount Rushmore had ties to the KKK.7
We can't even entertain this as a possibility. Urge members of Congress to reject any attempt to put Trump on Mount Rushmore, currency, airports, national landmarks, and monuments. Sign the petition and then share with three friends so we can build the overwhelming opposition needed to shut this down.
Thanks for all you do.
