The Trump administration’s vicious attacks on Social Security threaten its
very existence. The chief data officer at the Social Security
Administration (SSA) just reported that DOGE uploaded Social Security data
to a cloud account that could expose the sensitive information of 300
million people, including health diagnoses, income, banking information,
familial relationships and personal biographic data.^1
And after months of slashing funding and staff at the SSA, the White House
now admits that Trump’s big budget law includes a “backdoor way for
privatizing Social Security.”^2
Trump’s cuts, firings, incompetence, and destructiveness could shatter
Social Security — a program that 61% of people who receive benefits said
that they could not survive without.^3 Congress must do everything in
their power to protect, restore, and fully fund Social Security.

Trump claimed over and over again that he wouldn’t touch Social Security.
But his big ugly budget not only slashed Medicaid and handed tax breaks to
billionaires — it also set in motion a plan to undermine Social Security.
His administration has even politicized the SSA. After the budget law
passed, the SSA sent an email to beneficiaries with misleading information
about taxes in order to celebrate Trump’s legislation.^4
Head of the SSA under President Biden, Martin O’Malley, warned that the
program is on the brink of collapse after Trump and DOGE’s cuts.^5
The rapid dismantling of Social Security calls for the urgent attention of
our lawmakers. Congress must take a stand to save our most critical
benefits program before the Trump administration dismantles it.
