Dear John, Over a century ago, brave Americans stood up against dangerous conditions, exploitative wages, and inhumane hours. They fought not just for their own dignity, but for a better future — one where fairness, safety, and opportunity were possible for all. Their movement gave rise to the American middle class and reshaped our nation’s economy. Thanks to their efforts, we enjoy rights many now take for granted: the 8-hour workday, weekends, safer workplaces, and protections against abuse. In 1894, Labor Day was established as a national holiday to honor their struggle and the vital role of workers in America’s story. But that fight is not over. Today, too many Americans are still working multiple jobs and barely getting by. Too many lack health care, paid leave, or a living wage. As we remember the labor movement’s victories, we must also recommit to strengthening workers’ rights for this generation and the next. Our way of life wasn’t given — it was won. By those who came before us, and by those still working every day to move our country forward. Thank you for being part of that continued fight. Today I’m wishing you and your family a safe and restful Labor Day. Warm Regards, Raja
