Twenty-five years ago, I co-founded Common Dreams with my late wife, Lina Newhouser.

At the time, there were a lot of naysayers who predicted that we wouldn't make it more than a few months. Could you actually sustain a full-time newsroom while taking zero corporate advertising and charging no subscription fee? Truly, even we weren't sure it would work.

But we had a vision for a new media model of people-powered, progressive journalism that could do three things: inform, inspire, and ignite change for the common good.

We knew the corporate media was failing — corrupted by profit-seeking and greed — and we hoped that enough readers would embrace this new model and voluntarily donate to keep us going.

Now, all these years later, we're still here, and the need for nonprofit, independent journalism is greater than ever.

America is transforming into an authoritarian dictatorship with a speed and ruthlessness that once seemed impossible. And while I'm proud to say that Common Dreams has responded to these threats with some of the best, most high-impact journalism that we've ever done, we're as dependent on reader donations today as we were on the day we started.

The bottom line is that today, Labor Day, is the very last day of our Summer Campaign, and we're still over $15,000 short. If we don't make it, we simply won't have the funding necessary to support our newsroom in the weeks and months to come.

So with time running out before tonight's midnight deadline, I'm making one last appeal: Please donate to Common Dreams and keep progressive, nonprofit media alive. And as a reminder, all donations received before midnight will be matched 100%. ([link removed])
