Assistant Secretary of State Empowers Women

IWF is delighted to announce that Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs Manisha Singh is the latest in our popular series of Champion Women profiles ([link removed]) .

Assistant Secretary Singh, who was unanimously confirmed by the Senate in 2017, has an extensive portfolio, but she has made empowering women a key part of her job.

Singh works closely with Ivanka Trump on the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity initiative, W-GDP, which is directed at women in developing countries, and on an initiative that is her own brainchild, Providing Opportunities for Women’s Economic Rise (POWER), which focuses on women entrepreneurs in the U.S. who can benefit from exposure to overseas opportunities.

A Renaissance women, who graduated from college at 19 and holds a prestigious Certificate in law from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands, Singh not only has an important policy position at the State Department, but she is a gifted amateur photographer and short story writer.

She grew up in a small town in Florida, the daughter of immigrants. “My parents were your classic immigrant story,” she says. “They wanted to come to this country because it is not just the greatest country in history but because it is the greatest idea in world history. I think the idea of America is that, when we all come together, we can succeed as a society. When we buy into the American idea, we all move forward. My parents always impressed upon me how lucky we were to be in this country, and that is partly the origin for my interest in public service.”
