Tomorrow is a celebration of Labor Day, a holiday that goes back over 100 years and is rooted in the work of labor activists pushing to recognize contributions of American workers to our nation's prosperity.
A century later, working class families are still bearing the brunt of an unjust economy.
Donald Trump promised these families relief. That he would lower prices and create job security. Everything he has done contradicts that promise.
Do you know what doesn’t help working people?
Tearing up union contracts and rolling back collective bargaining rights for public servants and other workers.
Fudging job numbers and firing the person in charge of labor statistics.
Imposing outrageous tariffs that will raise prices for consumers.
Lying about the prices of groceries and gasoline.
Passing tax cuts for billionaires — paid for by cutting Medicaid and SNAP services for families.
Gutting agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — effectively attacking poor people to help greedy bank CEOs get richer.
If they were actually interested in supporting working people, they could take a page from my book:
We could be bolstering workers’ rights and strengthening labor unions so folks can have good wages, strong benefits, job security, and live with dignity.
We could be passing a national paid family and medical leave program so that people don’t lose their paycheck when caring for loved ones.
That’s what our government should be doing right now. To Donald Trump and Republicans who claim they’re pro-family, I say: Do your jobs. I can’t hear the words you say because I see the things you do.
And I’ll keep doing my best at doing mine — fighting for workers, families, and everyone who calls this country home. Fighting Trump’s harmful legislation and making Republicans wear it. Listening to the community’s concerns and standing in the gap.
In solidarity,
Ayanna
