Friend, it’s Ed. I have some personal thoughts that I want to share with you today. I hope you’ll read to the end.
Donald Trump and the Republicans' victory on election night last November was of course a disaster for our nation.
But what really made that night such a great disappointment for me was seeing Democrats lose a good deal of support from working-class Americans.
For decades, Democrats have been the party of the workers. We’re the party of FDR’s New Deal and LBJ’s Great Society. We created and passed Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, national union rights, worker protections, and much more.
We’ve helped create millions of good-paying jobs. We’ve built roads, bridges, railways, dams, power stations, and more all across the country. We’ve stood up to the mega-corporations that make Americans work longer hours for lower wages.
Republicans, on the other hand, are the party of Reagan, Bush, and Trump. Their legacy is one of slashing the programs that Americans rely on, stripping away protections for workers, lowering taxes for the mega-rich, and giving huge handouts to their corporate donors.
And we are seeing how that legacy is still the core of the Republican party today: Trump’s biggest legislative accomplishment this year was to kick millions of Americans off their healthcare and food assistance so he could afford to lower his own taxes and the taxes of other billionaires.
Listen, I’m not going to mince words. Democrats are out of power. Our approval ratings are low. We have lost touch with many working Americans because they simply don’t think we fight for them.
If we are going to get out of this rut, win back the working class, and defeat the far-right, we have to decide what we stand for.
I for one think it’s far past time for Democrats to reconnect with our New Deal roots. To recommit ourselves to the fiery defense of working Americans. To make it clear to the voters that our number one priority is to make their lives more affordable, from healthcare, to housing, to your weekly trips to the grocery store.
Because Republicans are good at lying. They will rob $5 out of your pocket and tell you you just got paid. We have to go on offense and make an all-out case against Trump’s anti-worker, anti-American agenda and for a bold vision of the future where we rebuild America’s working class and ensure everyone can afford to prosper.
If you’re with me, I need your help. There are corporate Super PACs and billionaire donors who want to keep the Democrats from embracing bold progressive ideas. They are going to fight tooth and nail against our vision, and our only way to fight back is to stand in solidarity together.
That’s why I'm asking you: Make a contribution to my campaign today and power our mission to bring working class voters back onto the side of progress. This is the urgent mission of our time — we will not defeat Trump’s authoritarianism without fighting for working Americans. Anything you can afford today helps us do just that.
