Alabamians across the state are preparing to celebrate Labor Day on Monday. While this is a day for rest for many, Alabama Arise also encourages our members and supporters to use this time to reflect on the fight for economic justice: past, present and future.
One great way to start is to check out Arise’s new Worker Power Campaign landing page. This is a hub for all things related to our work creating a fairer Alabama for all workers. You will find important news and resources about our policy and organizing work and ways to plug in to these important efforts. And we will continue to update the campaign page as our work grows in the coming months.
How Arise is helping empower workers across our state
The labor movement has been essential in improving the lives of workers, winning us weekends, child labor protections and workplace safety measures. And Arise is continuing the fight to build worker power in our state. We have invested time and resources this year into improving the lives of Alabama workers in numerous ways. Here are a few:
-
Arise launched our Worker Power Campaign to support working people seeking better pay and working conditions.
- Our worker policy advocate Dev Wakeley helped write and pass the best paid parental leave policy in the Southeast. These benefits took effect in July for educators and state employees across Alabama.
- Arise and its staff union cordially reached a collective bargaining agreement in May.
Our state's leaders love to talk about how great Alabama is for business, but we don't talk enough about how to ensure great conditions for the workers who make companies’ success possible. It’s time for that to change.
Arise worker policy advocate Dev Wakeley has a new blog post exploring what policymakers can and should be doing to improve wages and working conditions for Alabamians. We hope you'll read it and share it with your networks.
