Friend,
As a former college athlete on a women’s lacrosse team, I can’t even imagine having to compete against biological males on the field, for a spot on the team, and for a scholarship or other academic opportunities.
In Bostock, the Supreme Court ruled that it is unlawful for an employer to base any decisions on biological sex. If the Court’s logic is applied to education, schools will be prohibited from denying biological boys a spot on women’s athletic teams.
Since the enactment of Title IX in 1972, there has been an explosion of women’s high school and college sports. Since 1972, there has been “a 545% increase in the percentage of women playing college sports and a 990% increase in the percentages of women playing high school sport.” Today, more than half of all girls under age 18 have participated in a team sport.
We should be working to grow those numbers even more, because athletic participation is associated with improved physical and mental health, greater confidence, higher educational attainment, and better life outcomes.
Playing sports, particularly on a college team, provided me a world of opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Let’s keep the playing field fair and preserve those opportunities for other women and girls.
