Join a Labor Day event this weekend!

This weekend union members and fellow workers from across the country will take part in over 1,000 marches, rallies, picnics, and parades to celebrate the power we have when we come together to demand better wages, a voice on the job, and more opportunities for our families.

As the Trump administration continues its assault on working people and our democratic institutions, this Labor Day will also be an opportunity for us to fight back against an administration that prizes tax cuts for billionaires over our well being.

Please consider joining fellow CFT members at the major rallies in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego.

The Los Angeles march and rally will take place on Monday, with participants gathering at 8:00 a.m. at Broad and E. Street in Wilmington, for a 10:00 a.m. march to Banning Park, where a noontime rally and picnic will take place. You can find more details and RSVP here.

The San Francisco event will take place on Monday with participants gathering at the intersection of 16th and Mission Streets for an 11:00 a.m. march to Mission Dolores Park for a rally and fair. You can find more details and RSVP here.

The San Diego event will take place on Monday at Waterfront Park with a resource fair, rally, and march. You can find more information here.

Randi Weingarten joins SF labor breakfast to kick off Labor Day weekend

AFT President Randi Weingarten joined the annual San Francisco Labor Council breakfast this morning, delivering a powerful speech on how the Labor Movement is key to successfully fighting back against the attacks from the Trump administration.

“This is a labor town. This is a union town. This community knows how to fight,” said Randi. “This community understands that power concedes nothing without a demand.”

Following the breakfast, Randi joined CFT President Jeff Freiatas and UESF leaders in a conversation with parent leaders from Faith in Action Bay Area, to discuss how educators and parents can continue to build relationships to advocate for our communities.

News in Brief

CFT Back to School Tour update – In addition to San Francisco, CFT leaders got the opportunity to attend an event this week with Palomar faculty and classified unions in San Marcos, including Council of Classified Professionals President Carl Williams (pictured above). Check out this collection of photos from the tour, as well as this great video from the visit last week in Petaluma. Speaking of Petaluma, congratulations are in order to Petaluma High school teacher Kevin Jackson, who has been chosen as one of ten nationwide finalists for the Bill of Rights Institute National Civics Teacher of the Year Award.

UC-AFT and coalition of UC unions condemn Trump’s attacks on UC – This week UC-AFT joined a coalition of UC unions representing tens of thousands of workers to release a statement condemning the Trump administration’s unprecedented actions against the University of California and urging the UC administration not to capitulate to Trump’s demands. On August 8, the administration froze $584 million in critical federal research funding and demanded a $1 billion settlement from UCLA — an action that, if accepted, would threaten jobs vital to California’s economy, devastate life-saving scientific research, public health programs, and the educational mission of the nation’s leading public university system.
