Dear Friend,

I hope you had a good week.

I know our community is facing many challenges. Tariffs are raising prices, ICE is detaining innocent folks, and Trump is attacking Hispanic Colleges and Universities all while the threat of authoritarianism grows. I am pushing back and hope you will join me. There is strength in unity, so thank you for being part of the fight to protect our democracy.

As always, if I can be of any assistance to you, please call my office in San Antonio at (210) 348-8216 or my office in Washington at (202) 225-3236.

U.S. Global Leadership Coalition

Global leadership is vital to America’s development and diplomacy. Yesterday, I had the honor of joining the U.S. Global Leadership in San Antonio for a discussion on how America’s international engagement boosts jobs, support farmers, and grows Texas’ economy.

With a strong military and diplomatic presence, San Antonio is helping lead the way.

Constituent Meetings

This week, I met with USAID Foreign Service Officers who recently returned to San Antonio after Trump’s devastating cuts to the State Department workforce. We talked about the future of foreign assistance and ways that I am fighting for our federal workers.

I’m grateful for their dedicated service and look forward to seeing how they will leverage their diplomacy and development expertise locally in San Antonio. Long-term, they will play a critical role rebuilding the U.S. foreign service and foreign assistance.

Growing Threat of Authoritarianism

National Guard in Washington, D.C.

The National Guard's presence in our capital is another sign of creeping fascism. This is not about safety, it's about control. Now, Trump wants to take over more of America's cities. We must stand against this abuse of power meant to intimidate our communities.

Trump's Investigation on Former National Security Advisor

Moreover, Trump is abusing his power to punish his political enemies. He's appointed the most unqualified cabinet in U.S. history while firing career military and intelligence professionals, like the National Security Agency and Defense Intelligence Agency directors. Because he doesn't want experts. He wants enablers.

Hispanic Colleges and Universities

The Trump administration refuses to defend $350 million in funding for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), including $121 million in Texas. It's unjust and will hurt Latino students and millions more who attend these colleges and universities. We will keep fighting to ensure HSIs have the support they need to uplift all students.

Honoring Colonel Barnes

This week, I want to recognize an individual in our community who is turning 105 years old. Happy Birthday to Colonel Willard Alvin “Bill” Barnes!

Colonel Barnes is a fighter. He dedicated more than three decades of his life to serving our country in the United States Army and the United States Air Force. In his private life, he has also dedicated himself to serving senior citizens, unhoused persons and his church community. Beyond his service to the country, he was a dedicated husband, and is a loving father, and great grandfather.

Happy Birthday, Willard! Thank you for your contributions to San Antonio, Texas, and our country.
