Friend,

Twenty years ago today, Hurricane Katrina tore through the Gulf Coast – devastating families, destroying homes, and exposing to the entire nation how disasters hit low-income communities and communities of color first and worst.

Since then, floods, fires, and storms have become more frequent and grown much more destructive. Warmer oceans and rising seas – powered by fossil fuel pollution – are making hurricanes stronger and more dangerous. But while communities are forced to rebuild on their own, Big Oil CEOs rake in billions and pay nothing toward the damage they’ve caused.

Let’s make sure the people who profited from climate destruction finally foot the bill for recovery and resilience.

Make polluters pay

Everyday people didn’t cause these unnatural disasters – in fact, fossil fuel companies knew in the 1970s that burning oil and gas would create enough carbon pollution to cause extreme weather like this. They predicted with surprising accuracy the impacts we’re feeling now.

So why should we have to pay to clean up their mess?

It doesn’t have to be this way: The Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act would establish a federal climate superfund that would make polluters pay a modest fee (just 1% of their profits) to raise billions of dollars each year for disaster recovery, rebuilding, and climate resilience.

States like Vermont and New York have already passed their own versions of this bill! Now it’s time for Congress to act.

Your voice can help make history -- tell Congress to pass the Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act today and ensure a safer, more resilient future for all.

Together, we can turn the tide. Communities on the frontlines of climate disasters deserve justice, and polluters must be held accountable for the damage they’ve knowingly caused.

In Solidarity,
Sierra Club
