Governor DeWine Celebrates Groundbreaking for
New High School in Athens

(ATHENS, Ohio) – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine today joined local leaders, students, and community members to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Athens High School, a $69 million project supported by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC).

“I want to congratulate Athens on this exciting day breaking ground on their new high school,” said Governor DeWine. “School buildings are important, but the real heart of our schools are our teachers and students. Today I salute the teachers who are making a brighter future for our young Ohioans.” 

“This groundbreaking represents a shared vision brought to life by our community’s unwavering commitment,” said Chad Springer, superintendent of Athens City School District. “This new high school will be a hub for learning, opportunity, and growth, breaking down barriers to ensure every student has access to the tools they need to succeed.”

The three-story, 153,140-square-foot facility will feature advanced safety measures, including secure entry vestibules and comprehensive surveillance systems to ensure a safe learning environment.

The completion of the new high school will mark the final phase in the Athens City School District's facilities plan that included building two new elementary schools, renovating an elementary and middle school, and demolishing three outdated elementary schools. 

OFCC provided $27.7 million in state funds to the project. Additionally, $42 million in local contributions, including a voter-approved property tax levy in November 2023, support the total funding for the project.

The new Athens High School is set to open for the 2027-2028 school year.
