In case you missed it, I went on CNN this week to address Donald Trump’s latest threat: sending the National Guard to patrol the streets of Chicago.

Let’s call this what it is: an un-American abuse of power. The President is trying to politicize the National Guard to distract from the very real consequences of his agenda — higher health care costs, cuts to critical programs, and attacks on our fundamental rights.

Here in Illinois, I have always worked with federal, state, and local law enforcement to prosecute crime. And together, we’ve made real progress — violent crime in Chicago has decreased over the last year. But we did not request, nor do we need, the kind of federal intervention Trump is pushing. It will not make us safer. It only undermines our democracy and inches us closer to authoritarianism.

As your Attorney General, I am committed to standing up for the Constitution and the rule of law — no matter who is trying to trample it.
